The Spirit of Rememberance: Creating Día de los Muertos Tequila Cocktails

Day of the dead
Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a vibrant and meaningful Mexican holiday that honours and celebrates loved ones who have passed away. It is a time when families come together to remember and cherish the memories of those no longer with us. An essential part of this celebration is the creation of colourful altars adorned with marigolds, sugar skulls, and offerings of food and drinks. Among these offerings, tequila cocktails play a prominent role, adding a spirited touch to the festivities. In this article, we will explore the rich traditions of Día de los Muertos and discover some creative tequila cocktail recipes to help you toast the memories of your loved ones.

THE ESSENCE OF DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS

Día de los Muertos, often confused with Halloween, is a unique and deeply spiritual holiday with roots dating back thousands of years to indigenous Mexican cultures. It takes place on November 1st and 2nd, coinciding with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. During this time, families believe that the souls of the deceased return to the living world to be reunited with their loved ones. It is a truly death-positive day full of love, laughter and celebrations.

ALTARS & OFRENDAS

Central to Día de los Muertos is the Altars, or Ofrendas, which are created by families to honour their departed relatives. These altars are a visual feast of colours, textures, and symbolism. They typically include the deceased person's photograph, favourite foods, candles, incense, and, of course, beverages like Tequila, to quench the thirst of the returning spirits.

TEQUILA: THE SPIRIT OF CELEBRATION

Tequila has a special place in Día de los Muertos celebrations. It is believed that the strong, smoky aroma of Tequila helps guide the spirits back to the world of the living. As such, it's not uncommon to find tequila bottles placed on altars and shared among family and friends during this time.
