The Origins: Where Does Tequila Come From?

VIVR Tequila Range

Tequila is known for its distinctive flavour as well as its power to turn any gathering into a fiesta. But Tequila is much more than a great party companion. It has a rich history spanning hundreds of years. While many people associate Tequila with good times and salt-rimmed glasses, few actually know about its fascinating origins and the cultural significance it holds in Mexico. Today, we will dive into the captivating journey of Tequila, from its humble beginnings to its modern popularity.

THE AGAVE PLANT: THE HEART OF TEQUILA

At the heart of Tequila lies the Agave plant, specifically the Blue Weber Agave (Agave Tequilana Weber) plant. This plant has been cultivated for thousands of years by indigenous people in Mexico, long before the arrival of Spanish conquistadors. The indigenous population recognised the plant's versatility, using it for food, fibres, fermentable sugars and more.

THE BIRTHPLACE: TEQUILA, JALISCO

The spirit was named after the town it was created. Tequila is located in the state of Jalisco, on the West coast of Mexico. This picturesque region, with its red volcanic soil and ideal climate, provides the perfect conditions for cultivating Blue Weber Agave. The perfect combination of terroir and tradition that constitutes Jalisco has made the region the epicentre of Tequila production.

THE DISTILLATION PROCESS

The journey from the Agave plant to Tequila is a labour-intensive process that has taken many years to perfect. The hearts of the Blue Weber Agave, known as "piñas," are harvested and roasted to extract their sweet juices. These juices are then fermented and distilled to produce a low-proof spirit called "Ordinario." This spirit is distilled a second time to create Tequila.

THE EVOLUTION OF TEQUILA

Tequila has come a long way since its inception. Early versions were often rough and fiery, quite different from the smooth and nuanced Tequilas available today. The refinement of Tequila production can be attributed to innovative distillers who experimented with ageing techniques and modern equipment, creating a range of styles, from Tequila Blanco (un-aged) to Tequila Reposado (Aged for 2 to 12 months) all the way to Tequila Añejo (aged for at least one year).

TEQUILA'S POPULARISATION

Tequila's journey from a local Mexican spirit to a global sensation is a testament to its quality and appeal. It gained recognition beyond Mexico's borders in the early 20th century, thanks in part to its presence in cocktails like the Margarita and the Tequila Sunrise.

In recent years, the craft cocktail movement and a growing appreciation for artisanal spirits have elevated Tequila to new heights. Today, Tequila is enjoyed by connoisseurs worldwide, and premium brands such as VIVIR Tequila are celebrated for their unique flavours and craftsmanship.

THE CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Tequila is more than just a drink; it's a symbol of Mexican culture and identity. It plays a central role in celebrations, rituals, and traditions. From toasting to the reverence shown during the Day of the Dead to celebrating the birth of a child, this spirit is deeply woven into the fabric of Mexican society and is present at every stage of an individual’s life.

Tequila's origins are deeply rooted in Mexican history and culture. From the Blue Weber Agave plantations of Jalisco to the distillation process that has evolved over centuries, this iconic spirit tells a captivating story of tradition and innovation. Whether sipped neat, mixed into cocktails, or savoured as part of a cultural experience, Tequila continues to bring people together, celebrating the rich heritage from which it was born.

So, the next time you raise a glass of Tequila, remember the journey it has taken from ancient Mexico to the world's stages and appreciate the craftsmanship and culture that make it truly exceptional.
